The Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of BC and Yukon is seeking to appoint a full-time position of Dean of the Territory of the People and incumbent priest for St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kamloops, British Columbia.
St. Paul’s is an engaged congregation with a variety of well-run ministries contributing to the life of our parish and community. The Rector has oversight of this Cathedral parish of approximately 300 members in a city of about 100,000. The position is supported by part-time paid staff: an office coordinator, a custodian, a music director and a youth coordinator. Leadership is supported by retired honorary assistant clergy, two wardens, two Lay Ministers of Word and Sacrament, plus a large group of volunteers in groups, teams and standing committees.
The Rector of the Cathedral is also the Dean of the Territory of the People (the Territory) and as such is the second ecclesiastical officer – next to the Bishop. The Dean therefore participates significantly in the offices of the Territory.
We are seeking a Dean who is passionate and experienced in preaching, parish growth and development, leadership and pastoral care; an effective communicator who is compassionate, friendly, engaging, and energetic, to help guide St. Paul's vision for many years to come. Three areas the Cathedral Community has indicated are priorities in ministry are:
- Supportive in strengthening Children, Youth and Families Ministry,
- Comfortable with both BAS and BCP worship and open to exploring new ways of worship,
- Proficient and comfortable with modern technology and virtual ministry.
The Dean will be a leader within the Territory of the People, will support clergy and lay development, serve on Coordinating Council and other Territory committees, and assist the Bishop in supporting the ministry and goals of the Territory. The Territory of the People has a strong collegiality amongst clergy. The Dean will be an experienced priest and a proven team player.
With small churches in the rural areas, towns, and Indigenous communities, the Territory is adapting to find new models of ministry in worshipping communities and to equip people for the ministry of licensed lay ministers, Pastoral Elders, and priests and deacons, some locally trained. The Territory is committed to a journey of truth and reconciliation, walking together with Indigenous people.
The Territory needs adventurous and creative leadership for the future, to participate in God’s mission in a time of immense change in church and society; the new Dean will be an integral part of this ministry.
The Dean will work at the Territory level to help bring global and local issues to the community.
It is not expected for the successful applicant to take on the role of Dean immediately but will first get to know the parish of the Cathedral, as well as become familiar with the policies and procedures of the Territory.
The City of Kamloops has a population of around 100,000 and offers a diverse variety of sports, leisure activities, entertainment and shopping. A friendly community with something for everyone, Kamloops is known for its microbreweries, markets and cafes, as well as being renowned as the Tournament Capital of Canada. Kamloops is home to Thompson Rivers University, public and private schools offering education from Grades K-12, as well as specialized curriculum, such as the Kamloops School of the Arts, and Bert Edwards Science and Technology school. Royal Inland Hospital, a tertiary centre with 245 acute beds, is undergoing an $80 million clinical service building expansion. Other essential facilities include a Hospice Centre, several clinics and diverse medical practices.
Clergy from the wider church must present confirmation they are a priest in good standing and have their bishop’s permission to seek employment opportunities outside their own diocese. A current Criminal Records Check must be submitted with the application.
